Auditorium Reconstruction UTB

Realization

The main goal of the auditorium's reconstruction was to address the shortcomings of the original hall and modernize its technical equipment, while preserving and utilizing as many existing structures as possible. The issue of poor visibility, especially from the side seats of the original auditorium, was resolved by designing a new organic shape that ensures a good view of both the stage and the screen from every seat. This new, partially elliptical shape of the auditorium is reflected in the ceiling, which consists of six slanted wave-like panels above the seating area and a “canopy” above the stage. The geometry of these ceiling elements ensures optimal sound distribution, significantly improving the acoustics of the hall. Above the seating area, vertical slits house ventilation outlets and LED lighting, providing indirect illumination of the entire ceiling. The walls of the auditorium are lined with perforated acoustic panels, which not only give the space a rhythm but also highlight its organic shape. The same cladding is used on the five-meter-high vertical lamellae in front of the windows. These lamellae, motorized to rotate around their axis, can completely darken the auditorium or, when open, allow sunlight to brighten the interior.

The color scheme of the hall is based on muted tones of pastel gray walls, a dark gray floor, and a white ceiling. A striking contrast is provided by the upholstered seating in bright university red-orange.

The large foyer space has a relatively low ceiling. To address this, a wave-shaped ceiling of metal acoustic slats was designed, utilizing the free space between the main load-bearing beams of the ceiling. The ceiling allows easy removal of individual slats for simplified maintenance. The wave peaks are highlighted by linear LED lighting, which extends onto the walls around the backstage area. The division of the wall cladding seamlessly follows the linear design of the ceiling slats. In contrast to the dark auditorium, the foyer is designed in light colors – a white granite floor, white metal slats, and light HPL wall cladding. The color contrast is provided by the furniture – yellow chairs and a cloakroom for visitors in vibrant yellow-orange.

The existing staircase was newly clad in granite, and glass railings with stainless steel posts were added, giving the staircase a ceremonial character appropriate for the UTB auditorium.

“The new canopy above the stage not only enhances the acoustics but also gives the hall a unique atmosphere. Organic shapes and modern technology come together here, making the space not just functional, but visually striking.
